Homecoming unlucky match day 13

CUTHBERT, Ga. -- Two second half goals by the visitors gave the visiting side from Selma, Alabama a 2-0 victory over Andrew College on Friday afternoon in front of 125 fans celebrating homecoming that included seven players from the 1983 and 1984 Andrew College men's soccer teams at Hord Athletic Complex.

The Fighting Tigers (9-4-0) recorded six of their nine shots over the final 45 minutes to mount a furious second-half attack, but Andrew was not able to net the equalizer as they outshot the visitors in the game, 9-5.

After an opening half that featured just five shots between the two sides, Andrew and Concordia entered the break scoreless.

Concordia (6-4-0) took the early advantage in the second half after a scoreless opening period as Stanley Benjamin capitalized off a pass from Elisee John in the 47th minute.

Andrew responded with good spells of possession and nearly leveled the match when freshman Noah Waterman (New Brockton, Ala.) brought down a pass from freshman James Quinn (Slough, England) outside the box except for a last ditch interception by the Hornets defense.

Less than a minute later, Waterman received a pass outside the area by freshman Henning Nordvall (Orebro, Sweden) that earned Andrew a free kick when a high boot by Concordia near the Enterprise High School alums face was whistled for a dangerous play. Quinn's ensuing kick sailed harmlessly high of the target.

Concordia would take advantage of one of their few chances in the 55th minute when Pamphile Frantz was played into the box by Samson Metelus and Sunday Ogundipe to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

Over the final 35 minutes the match grew increasingly physical as Andrew pressed for goals seeing two yellow cards and an ejection handed out to Concordia players and two cautions to the Fighting Tigers. The match featured 21 fouls and just 14 combined shots as the teams battled for 90 minutes.

Freshman Josh Kennedy (Placida, Fla.) recorded three saves for the Fighting Tigers, while Thoby Wendy did one better with four of his own for Concordia.

Andrew returns to action with a 7 p.m. EST tilt at Darton State College in Albany, Ga., on Tuesday, Oct. 6 as the boys in Blue & Gold return to Region 17 action.
