GRACEVILLE, Fla. – Coming off a tough loss to Toccoa Falls just two days prior, the Andrew College Women's Volleyball team was determined to pick up a win in a highly anticipated rematch. The Lady Tigers did just that and made history as the first Andrew College intercollegiate team to find the win column with a 3-2 victory over Toccoa Falls on Saturday afternoon.
"After traveling to Toccoa Falls and losing in a tightly contested match, we were happy to have to opportunity to face them again in Graceville," said Head Coach Tevon Harris. "This meant a lot to the team and our coaching staff as it was the first win for this program in the NAIA, as well as making comeback against the Screaming Eagles."
Saturday's rematch was part of a tri-match between Andrew College, Toccoa Falls and host Baptist University of Florida. Despite riding their momentum into the second match of the day, the Fighting Tigers fell, 3-0, to Saturday's host.
Game 1 – Toccoa Falls
Unlike their previous matchup, the Fighting Tigers did not get off to a fast start in the opening set, falling 25-13. However, Andrew had plenty of fight left, taking Sets 2 and 3 by scores of 25-23 and 25-22.
Toccoa Falls responded by taking the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame. However, the Fighting Tigers bounced back and took the final set, 15-12, securing their first win of the season and becoming the first Andrew College intercollegiate team to earn a victory as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC).
Notes:
- Angelina Chambrey led the Lady Tigers with 18 kills and logged a season-high 15 digs.
- Neriah Curry led Andrew with 21 digs and four service aces.
- Chambrey led the Fighting Tigers with 22 points, followed by Zay'Aonna Johnson with seven.
Game 2 – Baptist University of Florida
Despite the loss in straight sets, the Lady Tigers showed their "Fighting" spirit throughout the match. Baptist University of Florida took the three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-17.
Despite their offensive presence at the net, errors became the story of the match. Through three sets, the Fighting Tigers posted 19 attack errors, eight service errors and five reception errors.
Regardless of the loss, Chambrey once again shined on the court alongside
Jade Timothy, as both finished with nine kills to lead the team.
Notes:
- Timothy's nine kills marked a season high, surpassing her previous high of five against Toccoa Falls.
- Timothy also led the Lady Tigers with 10 digs.
The Fighting Tigers return to action Tuesday, Sept. 8, against Faulkner University in Alabama.
