Andrew Explodes for 14 Runs in Win Over Gordon State
CUTHBERT, Ga. - In a high-scoring conference matchup, the Andrew College Fighting Tigers secured a dominant 14-9 victory over Gordon State College on Tuesday afternoon at Hord Athletic Complex.
Gordon State entered the contest as the No. 2 ranked team in the GCAA with an 8-3 record in conference play and 24-13 overall. However, the Fighting Tigers wasted no time setting the tone.
In the bottom of the first, Brady DeRosso delivered an RBI double to give Andrew an early 1-0 lead after Luke Meszar sparked the inning with aggressive baserunning, swiping both second and third before coming around to score.
Andrew continued to apply pressure in the early innings. Meszar added a double in the second, and DeRosso followed later with an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
Defensively, the Fighting Tigers were firing on all cylinders highlighted by a key play from RF Jose Massanet. Starting the season as an infielder, Massanet has adapted to the outfield distance and showed off his arm in right field by throwing out a runner attempting to stretch a base hit into a double, halting a potential Gordon State rally.
Gordon State would respond, however, rallying back to even the game by the middle innings. However in the bottom of the sixth, Andrew once again flipped the script .
3B Cameron Kenney delivered a clutch RBI single to tie the game. Later, Massanet worked a bases-loaded walk to give Andrew the lead, setting the stage for the game's biggest swing.
With two outs and the bases loaded, SS Colin Mendiola stepped to the plate, driving a ball off the wall for a bases-clearing double. A wild throw into the Highlanders dugout allowed Mendiola to come all the way around to score, giving Andrew a commanding 10-5 lead.
The Fighting Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded once again, Kenney came through with another timely hit, driving in two runs to extend the lead to 12-5.
Behind timely hitting from DeRosso, Meszar, Kenney, Massanet and Mendiola, along with some key defensive plays, the Fighting Tigers secured one of their biggest wins of the season.
The 14-9 victory not only highlights Andrew's offensive depth and late-inning execution, but also provides a major boost as the Fighting Tigers continue conference play against some of the GCAA's top competition.
Andrew College is a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I school located in Cuthbert, Georgia.
