Tigers Eliminated After Hard-Fought Battle With Gordon State
CUTHBERT, Ga - Following a tough 8-3 loss to South Georgia in the first round of the GCAA Championship Tournament, the Fighting Tigers still had an opportunity to battle their way through the elimination bracket and keep their season alive.
Unfortunately, despite an impressive five-run comeback that brought Andrew within one run of the lead, the Tigers ultimately fell to Gordon State, 11-10, ending their season.
Having defeated Gordon State in dominant fashion, 16-5, on Friday, April 24, the Fighting Tigers entered the matchup with confidence. However, the Highlanders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. After Gordon built a 6-1 advantage heading into the fourth inning, 1B Kai Huber drove in two runs with an RBI double, followed by a two-run single from SS Luke Meszar, bringing the Cut Boys within one run.
Trailing by one, the Fighting Tigers looked to capitalize on the momentum, and they did just that. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Head Coach Adam Biss turned to PH Tyler Walling, who delivered with a pinch-hit leadoff double. Walling eventually came around to score, tying the game before a Meszar sacrifice fly gave Andrew its first lead of the game.
With momentum shifting toward the blue and gold, the Fighting Tigers knew they would need to play a clean game to hold the advantage. However, the Highlanders responded immediately. Facing their first deficit of the game, Gordon State launched a two-run home run to retake the lead, one they would not surrender.
Entering the conference tournament, the Fighting Tigers were playing some of their best baseball of the season, having won four of their final five regular-season games, including an 11-7 victory over South Georgia and two wins over Gordon State with a +14 run differential. Despite the season-ending loss, Andrew continued to show resilience and fight until the final out.
Andrew College finished the season with a 21-30 overall record and a 12-16 mark in conference play.
